Sigourney Weaver Talking Ghostbusters 3 and Alien 5

Sigourney Weaver returning to Alien and Ghostbusters? We can only hope! (click for larger image)Every now and again news comes along that brings a smile to my face. Genre legend and still smokin’ hot Sigourney Weaver has been doing a little talking lately about two projects that are near and dear to every horror fan’s heart: Ghostbusters 3 and Alien 5!

First Weaver spoke with MTV’s Movies Blog about returning to Ghostbusters:

“I’ve heard about it,” Weaver tells MTV, adding, “I’m supposed to get in touch with Bill [Murray] next week.” Weaver also wonders if their characters from the film ended up together long term. “Does he think we got married or something? I would hope that my little Oscar [her baby in the film] would be one of the Ghostbusters even if I’m not in it!”

From there Weaver also revealed to MTV that she’s been in contact with Ridley Scott about a potentially radical overhaul of the Alien franchise. Here’s where things got really interesting.

“Both of us [Weaver and Scott] feel a kind of commitment to that woman. He’s as much responsible for who she is as I am. We’d have to go back to the drawing board on [the alien],” said Weaver. “Ridley said that right away when we first talked about [a fifth film]. What we’re interested in is taking the character of Ripley and seeing what other science fiction story we can tell about someone who has lived several lives.”

What does that mean exactly? An entirely new story void of the Xenomorphs? Doubtful, but one thing’s for sure — we’re gonna be paying a whole lot of attention as to how this all plays out.

I’d be so thrilled if Scott actually did this, but it’s hard to get excited for it. He seems to announce new movies all the bloody time and at 71, he’s not getting any younger. In terms of returning to science fiction, the last I heard was that he had finally secured rights to The Forever War and was going to do that.

About Alien 5 though, it’d be interesting to see where he actually takes it. I think at one point Scott was interested in exploring the origins of the Space Jockey, which I’d wouldn’t mind seeing if done right.

I would run such a bone storm on Weaver.

That is quote of the week!

Sigourney Weaver obviously subscribes to the ‘Joss Whedon school of promotion’ in that every time she has something to plug she randomly invokes the potential of more movies in her most beloved franchises.

With Whedon it’s FIREFLY, with Weaver it’s ALIEN.

With Tom Rothman at the helm, I’ve no doubt there are a ton of ways 20th Century Fox will attempt to stuck their nose in and meddle with the production of any Scott-helmed “Alien” film.

    • Caterpillar

I doubt that Rothman will be running Fox for much longer. His head could roll as early as when WOLVERINE stinks up multiplexes and bombs at the box office. Squeezing shitty movies through the studio’s production colon and pissing on any and all artistically inclined talent has never hurt any executive’s career in Hollywood but the fun thing is that Fox hasn’t exactly struck a lot of box office gold in recent years and the shareholders won’t tolerate that for much longer. And as soon as Rothman is out the door, there may be a way to make ALIEN 5 and do it right. With the three dozen films Scott has lined up right now it’s not like he would be able to move on this in the next couple years anyway.

  • What The Cat Dragged In

I would love to see Scott get back into science fiction. I have zero idea where they’d take the film, though.

“Ghostbusters III” is something I don’t think will turn out very good, but still want to see anyway. I would like to think they can pull some rabbits out of their hats and give us something good, though.

Ridley Scott just needs to do something in the Alien saga that just pisses all over both of the AVP movies and says “now that’s how you do a movie now BITCH!!”. How hard can it possibly be to do a good Alien movie? I mean, with that last AVP movie there was minute potential to start with and then they decided not to have any money in their budget for lights! WTF!!! ROFBTSOOTSH!!!!!

(that’s Rolling On Floor Beating The Stuffing Out Of The Studio Head! Which you all well know ought to be done from time to time, especially now that each head of a studio seems to constantly watch late night TV and see something like Friday The 13th part V and think “Oh, wouldn’t this movie be so much better with Jared Padalecki in it! He’s so hot right now!! F888ing studio heads.)

Ridley Scott’s Alien 5 would make me happier than anything I could imagine.

  • The Woman In Black

All I can say is holy moly! If either or both of these ideas come to fruition, there will indeed be a lot of happy campers around here!

    • PelusaMG

Yes, I’m already getting my ‘tent-pole’ up I’m that excited!!!
