Groovie Specs and Exclusive Pics!

Groovie Goolies DVDIf you grew up in the 70’s and were a monster fan, then you had to love the Groovie Goolies. This classic carton series about a group of wacky pop music playing monsters that reside in the castle known as Horrible Hall hasn’t been seen in years. Kept alive by a loyal fan base and bad bootleg VHS copies, the demand for a definitive collection has finally been heard. It’s time to throw away those bootlegs and get ready for the Goolies on DVD! Check out the press release below:

Los Angeles, CA – They were the grooviest, most eclectic array of animated monsters ever to hit the small screen in the early ‘70s. Now, thanks to BCI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Navarre Corporation, the latest series from the Filmation catalog will be available on DVD with the release of Groovie Goolies. The complete series, which aired in 1971, will be released on October 24th under BCI’s Ink & Paint brand, and from Media Company and underlying rights owner, Entertainment Rights Plc (ER), at a suggested retail price of $29.98.

“As evidenced by our previously announced lineup, Filmation released some of the most memorable animated series ever to hit television in the ‘70s and ‘80s,” said Jeff Hayne, Director of Acquisitions, BCI. “The Groovie Goolies were one of the most unique casts of characters on Saturday mornings, and we’re glad to offer this complete series not only to those of us that remember it on television, but to a whole new generation.”

Groovie Goolies features a cast of legendary monsters who get themselves in all sorts of wacky predicaments, as they joke, dance and sing their way through each episode. The hyper-colorful series stars the residents of Horrible Hall; Frankie, Wolfie, Drac, Mummy, Hagatha, Bella LaGhostley, Boneapart and a wealth of other animated tributes to classic monster movie icons. In each episode, the Goolies offer an abundance of goofy gags in “Weird Window Time,” a segment reminiscent of the classic Laugh-In series. Each episode ends with an original Groovie Goolies rock song presented in the form of a wildly animated music video. This show inspired many famous “Goolians” including Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, and wealth of Hollywood’s top award winning costumers, writers and make-up artists.

Special features include The Definitive Groovie Goolies Docu-Comedy produced by horror aficionados Wally Wingert and Dan Roebuck.

As it has done with its previous award-winning animated boxed sets, BCI will include in the three-disc collection a series of dazzling special features. The deluxe set will be packaged in a ghoulishly-designed slipcase with slim cases, and feature 16 episodes, plus interstitial jokes and songs!

Special features for Groovie Goolies: The Saturday “Mourning” Collection include:

The Definitive Groovie Goolies Docu-Comedy — Hosted by Wally Wingert (“Family Guy”/”Invader Zim”) and Dan Roebuck (Lost/The Fugitive) featuring interviews with Alice Cooper, Forrest J. Ackerman, Ron Chaney, Lou Scheimer, Oscar winning Make-Up artist Bill Corso, Goolie Head Writer Jack Mendelsohn, and more!.

•Full episode audio commentary tracks for two Groovie Goolies episodes with producer Lou Scheimer, Goolie head writer Jack Mendelsohn, Filmation historian Darrell McNeil, and Hollywood monster expert Bob Burns. Commentaries hosted by Wally Wingert.

•Image gallery of Groovie Goolies original model sheets, animation cels, storyboards, backgrounds, PSAs, and jokes used in the series.

•SING-A-LONG — Groovie-Get-Together – full-length version!

•Booklet and Trivia

•DVD-ROM Features – a selection of 16 complete scripts and the original Series Bible for Kookie Spookies (PDF format, PC/Mac readable)

•Digital restoration

I myself was fortunate enough to be asked by Dan Roebuck and Wally Wingert to help out on the documentary and even make a cameo appearance. My company Horror Shirts also made a small run of Groovie Goolies t-shirts that were worn by Dan and Wally throughout the documentary. There are still a few available on our site. Get ’em while they last, and check out exclusive pics from the making of the documentary below.

Also, if you plan on attending this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, make sure to catch Filmation founder Lou Scheimer as he talks about the upcoming Groovie Goolies DVD set on the Filmation panel on Friday, July 21st from 4:30–6:00 pm in Room 5AB.

This past weekend at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA betwixt a double screening of The Shape of Water and the classic The Creature from the Black Lagoon, the former’s director Guillermo del Toro (and star Doug Jones) sat down to discuss the latter’s influence on the film, Gill-man sex, “one sock movies,” his career in the genre, and more with moderator Jonah Ray, and we were there to film a portion of it.

Our sincere thanks to American Cinematheque general manager Dennis Bartok for extending the invitation.

Michael C. Hall Buried in Stephen King’s Pet Sematary

Published

on

Now here’s an audio book we can REALLY get behind! Entertainment Weekly is reporting that former “Dexter” star Michael C. Hall will be narrating the first ever unabridged recording of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. Sometime’s audio is better!

Readers have been asking for this audiobook for a very long time,” Stephen King said in a statement. “I know the listening experience will be worth the wait with Michael as narrator.

We’re thrilled to finally bring Pet Sematary to King’s audiobook fans,” Simon & Schuster Audio president and publisher Chris Lynch added. “Michael C. Hall is a perfect match for this timeless story, which has long deserved an unabridged production.

The unabridged audiobook of Pet Sematary will be released by Simon & Schuster Audio on March 27. Speaking of Hall… you know he would make a pretty friggin’ good casting choice to play Victor Pascow in the upcoming Pet Sematary remake. Just sayin’.

Saw-inspired Game Play With Me Sets a Trap on Steam

Published

on

Saw fans have a lot to be happy about right now. In addition to Jigsaw being teased for Dead by Daylight, a new Saw-themed game called Play With Me has launched on Steam, and although it’s not officially connected with the franchise in any way, developer Airem promised that they created a videogame which looks and plays as though it were made by Jigsaw himself. As you can tell from the trailer and screenshots, the production values and overall quality of Play With Me appear to be considerably higher than most other indie horror games released on Steam, and you’ll probably be very happy to see that Airem took the time and effort to create stylized hand drawn environments rather than using purchased assets from the Unity Store.

The killer behind the sinister traps in Play With Me is known as the Illusion, with the player taking control of investigative journalist Robert Hawk as he tries to fight his way through a series of sick and twisted obstacles created by the lunatic. The voice acting in the trailer was a little cheesy, although we see at 1:09 that the player will be tasked with using a kitchen knife to cut open a dead body (presumably to retrieve an item hidden in the cadaver’s stomach), which is not an image you’ll be forgetting anytime soon.

IQ Publishing are offering a 15% discount off Play With Me for those who purchase the game before January 24, so Saw fans might want to mark that deadline in their calendars and purchase it from Steam before the time is up. After all, it can’t be worse than Konami’s awful official Saw videogames.
