Offspring rolling soon! Our man Evil Andy is busting his ass at Fantasia right now. However, he did take a brief moment to drop us a line about the forthcoming adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s Offspring (review).

Set to start shooting in three weeks, Offspring will be produced and possibly directed by “>Headspace (review) director Andrew van den Houten. This guy is no stranger to Jack’s book-to-screen happenings as he also served as producer on “>The Girl Next Door (review). This may not seem like a whole lot of information right now, but I promise we’ll have much more to talk about very VERY soon regarding Offspring.

Mike Phalin

Since 1997, Michael Patrick Phalin has been a contributing writer to various websites including Dread Central, iMockery, Bloody Disgusting and KrytenSyxx. During the early 1980s, Phalin's love of the movie industry was fueled by the VHS tapes he found during his time spent at the video rental store his mother worked at. Rather than attending a daycare regularly, young Michael would form a tower of tapes with interesting cover art and go watch each one, the very first of these being the original 'A Nightmare on Elm Street.' From that point he was hooked on horror and the process behind creating special effects. In his twenties, Mike met Steve 'Uncle Creepy' Barton and was soon aiding the horror website Dread Central with film reviews. As the site grew in popularity, Phalin soon started writing news stories and conducting interviews on a daily basis. After a few years, he decided to take a break from writing to focus on other opportunities. After moving to a beach community with his wife Michelle, both were cast to appear in the final season of A&E's home improvement show 'Fix This Yard' in 2013. This event rekindled Mike's love of the entertainment industry. Between the time he spends being with his family, Michael continues to contribute to Dread Central both with writing and photography. In his mid-thirties, Phalin took up oil painting after being inspired by an episode of Bob Ross. Pieces of his artwork and photography can be found on his Tumblr and official website.

OFFSPRING isn’t much of a sequel. In fact, the book was written as a sort of remake of OFF SEASON because Ketchum felt that maybe his story would be more appreciated and understood the second time around. Of course he was wrong… OFFSPRING can easily stand on its own, even if they slavishly film the book without any changes. The fact that the only recurring character mentions similar events in the past is a standard plot device for these kinds of films. It’s still pretty weird that they’re making OFFSPRING instead of OFF SEASON, since personally I consider OFF SEASON the better and more cinematic story. The opening siege on the house by the cannibals could be nerve-wrecking in the hands of a capeable director and the same goes for the extended chase that’s the book’s final third. Well, maybe OFF SEASON has been optioned by someone else and the folks making OFFSPRING don’t want to sit and wait until it either gets made or comes up for option again.

Hopefully we’ll find out the answers to all these questions soon…

So, can we count Wrong Turn as the de facto Off Season, then? 😀

  • Sirand

Why make the sequel first? And Off Season has been ripped off so much, why even make that?

  • Kryten Syxx

I’m thinking Offspring will include a very truncated version of Off Season in the beginning … or skip it all together.

So, wait, has Off Season been made yet? How do you roll on a movie sequel when the first one hasn’t been released yet?
