Sometimes it’s hard to tell if something will really be fitting into our genre or not, so it’s just easier to throw it against a wall and see if it sticks. Much like spaghetti. So I’m throwing the announcement from this morning’s Variety that Dreamworks is remaking the Japanese film Yomigaeri and seeing if it slides down or not…
The original was helmed by Akihiko Shiota, the man responsible for the kinda-kaiju film Dororo and its planned sequels, and tells of a government official who is sent to a small town to investigate the reappearance of a young girl who vanished 60 years previous, only to show up having not aged a day.
So is she a ghost or something beyond that? Hard to tell for now, but the original did get nominated for Japanese Academy Awards for screenplay, director and best actress to name a few, so a remake had better not be some cheap rip-off appealing to the lowest common denominator.
