Padalecki Cast in Friday Remake

Padalecki Cast in Friday RemakeThe first bit of casting news has broken for the upcoming Platinum Dunes remake of Friday the 13th and thus far things aren’t looking too bad. Cross your fingers and take a deep breath.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that “Supernatural” star Jared Padalecki is in the final stages of negotiations to star in the Marcus Nispel helmed remake from a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

“The remake will focus on the serial killer, who will wear his now-iconic hockey mask. Padalecki will play the lead, who investigates what happened up at Crystal Lake.”

Friday the 13th is scheduled to hit theatres on Friday, February 13, 2009. Keep it right here for more!

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be.

After seeing the trailer for PROM NIGHT before the amazingly awesome DOOMSDAY…I can safely say that I have no interest in seeing this remake crapped upon unsuspecting moviegoers.

  • PelusaMG

Yeah, I really liked the remake of TCM too (I bought it), and also really did not like TCM: The Beginning (R Lee Ermy aside). I also liked The Amityville Horror remake (I bought that too), but still find myself saying each time I watch it… “Shit, that’s Van Wilder freaking out!”.

    Oh yes, that babysiter… :)

I have not seen The Hitcher (loved the original), and loved Transformers (seeing as we were talking about Michael Bay), but apart from its all mediocre fare IMHO…

Sorry for some of the typos!

Agreed with most of the sentiments here. While I love the F13 films, it’s not like the franchise is a beacon of quality. We pretty much only watch them to see Jason kill people in brutally creative ways and everything else is a waste of time. So if we can get Jason killing people in brutally creative ways that are well shot, plus a tiny bit of acting and some sort………..then it’s already a step above the majority of the previous films in the series. Besides, we really can’t sink any lower than they did with Jason Goes To Hell.

Also, enough with the Bay bashing, at least in terms of Platinum Dunes. The man isn’t like Spielberg and constantly paying attention to each and every project his name is on. No, Michael Bay just gives the OK to whatever pitch they want (be it a remake or an original) and MIGHT show up on set once or twice. Other than that it sounds like he’s pretty hands off. Like someone else said, if you want to bitch about how Platinum Dunes goes about things then you need to look towards those of ACTUALLY run the company: Andrew Form and Bradley Fuller. They are the ones who make the decisions.

Also, on a sidenote, it seems that of the five projects that Platinum Dunes currently has in active development……..the first two are actually originals!:

    2008 – “The Horsemen”
    2009 – “Unborn”
    2009 – “Friday The 13th”
    2009 – “The Birds”
    2010 – “A Nightmare On Elm Street”

They also, I believe, own the rights to remakes of the following projects: “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Wait Until Dark”…….as well as yet-to-surface originals entitled “Molly’s World” and “Superstitious”.

As far as my own opinions on their output? I thought their remakes of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “The Amityville Horror” were decent. That said, I didn’t like the Texas prequel or their redo of “The Hitcher” at all. So they’re batting at 50% for me at the moment. That’s still a better average than Ghost House Pictures, but that isn’t saying much.

“Blah blah blah, as a F13 fan I’m hating where this is going.”

Any time you want to contribute to the conversation and actually put something forward worth saying, feel free.

I enjoy the F13 series too, but I’m under no delusions that they’re anything more than some pretty bad movies. I vividly recall the hundreds of letters that Fango posted from horror fans in the early 80s declaring them garbage, going on and on about how they were sullying the genre, and I find it absolutely hilarious that people are defending them now. Cunningham and Miner were ONLY in it for the money — they didn’t care about the films, and they pumped out one cookie-cutter sequel after another until the well ran dry. If anything, this could inject some actual life into a franchise that wasn’t much good in the first place.

As for Bay, he really hasn’t had a ton to do with any of the Platinum Dunes remakes, other than signing off on them and putting in some nominal input. Blame Form and Fuller if you don’t like them. Aside from THE HITCHER, I don’t think any of them are truly terrible. At most, they’re forgettable, though I think the AMITYVILLE remake slightly trumps the original film by virtue of the rather good babysitter scene.

I don’t see any problem with this.

And Padalecki’s actually pretty great on SUPERNATURAL. Looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table.

“They were lowest common denominator money grabs, nothing more”

I agree with your sentiments MM, but Jason Vorhees has become a horror icon, and you cannot mess around with icons!

I hope Bay does good by the franchise, otherwise the baying hounds will be ready to rip his fucking balls off…

    … if he has any!!!???

  • Terminal

Blah blah blah, as a F13 fan I’m hating where this is going.

  • Messiahman

Whoops, typo. I meant Sean CunningHAM, of course.

  • Messiahman

Honestly, the original series was so unispired and unimaginative that it wouldn’t be difficult for this to be a step up. Nispel at least has a good eye. Sean Cunningman didn’t even have that much.

  • Sirand

Messiah speaks the truth. However, I still side with naysayers. The original movies were all terrible, but they were fun as trash. I don’t think we’ll even get that with the remake…just more of the same uber-serious faux-gritty music TV nonsense.

  • Messiahman

Uhm, it’s FRIDAY THE 13th — it’s not exactly art. If anything, Nispel’s version will look better than the others, all of which are shot pretty damn poorly. And Padalecki is without a doubt better than virtually any actor from the original series, all of whom were cast simply for looks in the first place.

Anyone bitching about this has an inflated sense of what the original movies are. They’re not classics — they were lowest common denominator money grabs, nothing more.

  • Ghoulie

Whoa,,,,,so like “totally awesome”. I hope Michael Bay is even more inspired and adds the whole fucking cast of “Orange County”.

We went from grandmasters like Val Lewton, Robert Wise, James Whale, George Romero, Tobe Hooper…TO THIS BULLSHIT?

Go away Mike and choke on your mother’s snatch hairs.

  • Hunter1006

I’m worried. Marcus Nispel directing? And Padalecki played the emo wimp in “House of Wax”

  • PelusaMG

Seeing as an anagram of Platinum Dunes is “anus dump inlet”, I think this ship will almost certainly be departing from docking bay “suck”.

    … all aboard Mr. Bay!!!

  • Chainsaw

I will laugh if it turns out he’s actually Jason the entire time.

  • Terminal

So will this mean a possible cameo from Jason in Supernatural? Please?!

And yes, I’m not looking forward to this.

  • What The Cat Dragged In

Not bad casting, but this movie will suck.

  • ryan74

i like him in supernatural. sounds cool!
