Scream 4 Gets a Rating! We Bet You'd Like to Know What it Is!

So the fourth film in the Scream franchise has officially gone before the MPAA and gotten itself a rating. So what's it gonna be - a PG-13 kills-off-screen-a-thon or the R-rated and bloody carnage fest we are hoping for? Read on to find out!

Wes Craven's Scream 4 has been rated PG for "Mild violence, scary imagery, mild language, and adult situations". We ... are ... stunned.

Okay, we're also bullshitting. Scream 4 has been rated R for "Strong bloody violence, language, and some teen drinking." And the angels sing.

Scream 4 stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Britt Robertson, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Nico Tortorella, Mary McDonnell, Alison Brie, Anthony Anderson, Aimee Teegarden, and Marielle Jaffe with confirmed cameos by Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Shenae Grimes, and Lucy Hale.

Look for Scream 4 in theatres on April 15th, 2011, and to stay on top of things, be sure to follow @wescraven on Twitter.

Synopsis
"Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney's appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger."

Matt Serafini's picture

As a fan of this series (the first two, at least), I'm looking forward to this. How in the hell can we NOT cover Scream 4?

PG? Huh? I really have no further comment. Just.....HUH?

Now I did. LOL. Admittedly sometimers I don't have the time to fully read each article but I want to see what's new so I read the headlines quickly with plans to read everything once I get home and have time to sit at my desk, enjoy an ice cold Becks and light up a Newport. . Maybe I should have read more than the first two lines, but once I saw that, and looked at the calendar and realized it wasn't April 1st yet, I didn't want to read anymore. Now I know, no comment until reading the full article. Let me know what punishment you good folks at DC decide to bestow upon me, and I'll like film it and put it on YouTube or something LOL.

And no, I didn't read the "rest story". Is it a good story? LOL, sorry, had to poke back!!! I'm sure you were laughing too hard at me to type what you meant, "rest OF THE story".

Will we get an apology from DC for endlessly HYPING this film when the reviews come in and it's as lousy as 'My Soul To Take'?

The positive energy directed at this film on DC boggles my mind.

Will Craven and crew receive an apology from you if the film hits and turns out to be a good movie?

Dread central hasn't been hyping the movie..they've been covering it. The energy is neither positive nor negative. There's merely quite a bit more of it than usual because, within the horror community ,this is actually fairly big news. It's a mainstream genre release with a substantial fan base that will launch a second trilogy in a series of films which are widely recognized as having brought the horror genre back from life support. I'd be surprised NOT to see so much press.

There was a similar amount of coverage given for the ANOES remake and I doubt anyone would argue that DC wasn't at all timid about tearing that flick a new cornhole when it arrived. Come to think of it, they didn't exactly lavish high praise on My Soul to Take either.

Personally, I'm reserving judgement. Despite being of the opinion that Scream 3 wasn't quite up to par with it's predecessors (I don't think it's a bad film, just flawed), I quite enjoyed the original trilogy overall. I'll need to actually, y'know, SEE the new film before I can criticize or defend it.

If the film is good I promise to post an apology eating my words and cheering that Craven hasn't lost it after all.

I don't want to see a horror icon fail; but he keeps causing disappointment. I still watch each of his films but now they just sadden me.

Agreed. I don't really see any hype. Just DC passing news along to us. As well they should. SCREAM did bring the horror genre back into the limelight. It was the best thing to happen to horror since the HELLRAISERS and NOES's of the 80's. SCREAM brought horror back to and into the 90's. And now, not only will fans of the franchise be out to see this, new horror fans, younger fans will be out to see this also. It's a win/win/win.

I don't get the same vibe as you that DC has been 'hyping' "Scream 4"... to me it feels like they've just been putting the news out there as it's been coming in! In fact, to me it feels like there's been a lack of "Scream 4" news, considering this is a major film coming out this year, but maybe all the behind the scenes nonsense has put a damper on it, or maybe shows that this is indeed a very troubled film!!!

"Come to think of it, they didn't exactly lavish high praise on My Soul to Take either."

The UK DVD and BD proudly declare "Four stars - Vintage Craven in Top Form - Dread Central" on their front cover artwork. I'm guessing it was the only positive review they could find for a pull-quote.

Steve Barton's picture

Dude ... Every movie deserves the benefit of the doubt. Like it or not this is one of the biggest horror releases of the year with a huge fanbase. It's our job to report on the news and let the reader make up their own mind about whether or not it's worth seeing.

If you were a fan of a particular franchise would you want to frequent a horror site that does nothing but slam the flick you wanna see - sight unseen? You'd think they were fucking idiots and you'd be absolutely right.

When a movie comes out, and it sucks, we'll be the first ones to say so, but even then you have to keep in mind that opinions are like assholes. One man's trash is anothers man's treasure and all that jazz.

So you're saying you honestly believe that this will be a good (or judging from the amount of coverage) great film?

I understand the motivations but in light of Craven's last few movies I don't think he deserves the attention he's getting now.

My Soul to Take, Cursed, Red Eye. Three strikes (4 if we count the abysmal script for The Hill Have Eyes 2 remake).

I'm saying it's one of the biggest horror releases this year so the amount of coverage is warranted and to be expected.

We try to never judge anything until we see it for ourselves. We cover tons of stuff we're not big fans of, and try to do so fairly and with a sense of humor.

Fair enough. I see that many here are looking forward to Scream 4. Some people even seem convinced that the original film needed a sequel in the first place or that number 3 was anything other than awful.

Scream revitalized the Hollywood horror in it's time. That's because it was a fresh film. This is a sequel and even if it's not utterly awful (i.e. Cursed) will not be fresh or do anything to convince Hollywood that we need anything other than cheaper Scream knock offs and sequels.

SCREAM was an awesome movie. LOVED it. I really liked the atmosphere of the very end. I just remember a road, houses, dusk (made me think of Halloween) and then "Don't Fear the Reaper" playing. Awesomeness!!!!! NO, it did NOT need a sequel. It should have been left alone. Everything fell into place, and that was that with that. It did not need it, and it was okay at best. The third? DEFINITELY NOT NEEDED and yes, FAIL.

Now, here we are, at present. I AM looking forward to this. Why? I thought about that. And really, I think it's a LACK of anything else better right now.Can you name me a GOOD slasher flick you saw at the theatres lately? I can't bring one to mind right away. That says something. To me anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing Ghostface running around gutting morons again. And I have hope. I HOPE it's good. I don't have faith, because I don't think it's going to be, but I have hope.

It's going to be the same movie, nothing new. Except with riffs on remakes! Never seen that before. But that won't stop people from saying "Wow, he is making fun of remakes! That's so brilliant!"

I'm still just wondering if all that talk of "New decade, new rules" is gonna be bullshit. I bet it has almost the same exact tone as the previous Scream movies. Then again, I'm not sure I'd WANT to see Ghostface strap someone to a chair and pull out some power tools. Hmm.
