James Wan Promises ANNABELLE 3 is More Like Past CONJURING Movies

Though the possessed devil doll Annabelle was merely intended as a plot motivator in the first Conjuring movie, released in 2013, she’s since become the franchise’s star character with two dedicated spinoff movies and a third set to haunt US theaters beginning July 3rd, 2019. Franchise mastermind James Wan took a moment to discuss the upcoming installment in the ever-expanding Conjuring universe while making the rounds promoting Aquaman.

While the first two Annabelle movies are prequels that take place in the past, Annabelle 3 will take place in The Conjuring’s “current” timelines. It will see the return of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively) and, according to what Wan recently told Bloody Disgusting, feels much more in line with 2013’s The Conjuring and 2016’s The Conjuring 2:

“I think by the very nature of Patrick and Vera being in it, I would say somewhat, yes, because in Annabelle 3 the doll comes back to the Warren’s home,” Wan said. “It finally comes to the Warren’s home so by the very nature of it actually being in the home and the story takes place in the Warren’s home, it feels more like a Conjuring film in that respect.”

We still don’t have a trailer (or even an official synopsis) yet for Annabelle 3, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground in order to bring you all Annabelle-related news as details emerge. Stay tuned!
