When it was announced that Kiefer Sutherland had joined the cast of the upcoming Flatliners remake, it didn’t seem like much of a stretch to assume that the film was actually going to be something of a sequel to the same-named 1990 flick. And indeed it is, as Sutherland has revealed his role.

Speaking with Metro, the actor spilled the beans.

I play a professor at the medical university,” said Sutherland. “It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film.”

I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes,” he added.

Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, Beau Mirchoff, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemens also star in the rem… sequel.

Flatliners is being directed by Niels Arden Oplev (Sweden’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, TV’s “Mr. Robot”) from a script by Ben Ripley (Source Code). It has a release date of August 18, 2017.

Laurence Mark and Michael Douglas (who also produced the original movie) are producing.

The original thriller, which co-starred Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin, and Oliver Platt, followed five medical students who decide to trigger near-death experiences by purposely stopping their hearts. However, as they delve into their work, the experiments become more and more dangerous and scary as they are forced to confront the sins of their pasts as well as contend with the paranormal consequences of crossing a line to the other side.
