As you’re surely aware by now, Universal Studios is soon going to be rebooting all of its iconic monster franchises and bringing them together in an epic shared universe; and first up is a brand new, present day take on The Mummy. Tom Cruise stars alongside Annabelle Wallis, and set photos this week give us our first tease.

The site also scored new plot details…

Cruise plays Navy Seal Tyler Colt, who goes on a mission in the Iraqi desert to find a group of terrorists hiding out in a bunker. However, their prey turn out to be mere grave robbers who have all magically died, and when they go inside the bunker, Tyler and his team also succumb to some mystical forces out of their control, which is when they realize they are actually in an ancient tomb.

While his men end up turning on each other, Cruise’s character is the only one to make it all the way deep within the tomb alive and find an ominous black iron sarcophagus. After he tries to open it, he is stabbed in the palm; and his mind is cursed with visions of Ashurbanipal, King of Assyria, more informally known as The Mummy.”

Sofia Boutella will play the iconic monster, and the cast also includes Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), and Marwan Kenzari.

Universal tapped Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan last summer to help develop a monster universe for Universal with rebooted versions of classic monster movies. Kurtzman is directing and also producing alongside Morgan and Sean Daniel. Jon Spaihts penned the script.

Universal executive VP of production Jon Mone and VP of development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio.
