Wolfman Director Hints at Jurassic Park IV

With Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman just around the corner (finally!) and the director making the promotional rounds to plug the horror remake, he’s opening up on some projects in the pipeline – including a new Jurassic Park flick, which could very well be the start of a new trilogy!

Boxoffice interviewed Johnston, turning the conversation to Jurassic Park IV after a lengthy Wolfman discussion:

Boxoffice: The internet is freaking out that there might be a Jurassic Park IV.

Joe Johnston: Wow, when did that happen?

Bo: November—you mentioned to Ain’t it Cool News that there might be a good script.

JJ: Did I tell him? Was it me?

Bo: You said that there was no way to get people back on the island for a fourth time and have it make sense, but that 2001 was the last installment and we’re due.

JJ: Well, there is going to be a Jurassic Park IV. And it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen. It breaks away from the first three—it’s essentially the beginning of the second Jurassic Park trilogy. It’s going to be done in a completely different way. That’s pretty much all I can tell you.

Bo: A second trilogy?

JJ: If you think of the first three as a trilogy, number four would be the beginning of a second trilogy.

Bo: That’s big. So not to lock you in, but there’s a possibility there might be a total of six films?

JJ: Well, you never know. If they keep working—and if audiences keep going to them—there’s no reason why there wouldn’t be. We just want to make them justified in their own right. We don’t want to make sequel after sequel just because there’s a market for it. We want to tell different, interesting stories. You don’t want to just sell hamburger.

I can’t imagine what this bold new concept might be, but it’s even harder to imagine people caring all that much. Furthermore, seventeen years have passed since the original – isn’t it about time for a reboot by Hollywood standards?

While we await more details, relive the excitement of watching the first teaser trailer for the first Jurassic Park:

I didn’t think III was awful, I just thought it was incredibly underwhelming. The movie felt like the day after a large party.

Everything seemed so bland and exhausting. There was simply no life or child like enthusiasm that Spielberg brought to the first two movies of the franchise.

Hell not even Sam Neill and William H. Macy could muster up the energy and help this entry stand out. When a Pterodatcyl attack brings on a large yawn you know they’ve pretty much taken this series as far as it can go.

I’m going to give Johnston another chance.

I’ve been looking forward to a JP:IV ever since it was first mentioned several years ago, so this is encouraging! We all know the story is going to suck, but let’s hope they at least do justice to Stan Winston’s superb and established body of work on this series of films…

God help us all…III was horrible…you think Universal would have the common sense not to give him the reigns a second time after the craptacular sequel we call III. But, whatever…Chrichton is turning in his grave.
