You may recognize Charlie Hunnam as Jax in the FX drama Sons of Anarchy, but who knew the guy was also a budding screenwriter? His first script, Vlad, is currently lined up to be produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Summit Entertainment, and we have some information pertaining to the approach the writer/actor is taking with the material.
The Hollywood Insider sat down with Hunnam to talk about Vlad, which will begin with him as a young man assuming the role of prince. ”We actually go all the way through his life. Basically what happened was, the Ottoman Empire was expanding at an exponentially fast rate with a father-son duo of sultans, who increased the size of their territory tenfold within 50 years.”
Eventually the film will focus on the rivalry between brothers, Vlad and Radu, using the backdrop of their conflicting religious upbringings (Christian and Muslim) as a background. Hunnam mentions that while he would love to play the titular character, he wrote it envisioning Colin Farrell or Christian Bale as the lead.
”There’s a reality to making this type of film and how much it costs, and I’m just not a big enough name to justify that type of budget right now. But I definitely know this guy really well. Inevitably, because he’s my take on Vlad, he acts in a lot of ways that I can really relate to. I capitalized on the stuff that I can empathize with in terms of his story. So just by virtue of that, I would definitely be a smart candidate to consider.”
Lastly, if Hunnam gets his way, the film will be devoid of the mythical vampirism that is often affiliated with the historical figure. Probably a smart move, although I think vampirism could’ve helped such biopics as Ray and Walk the Line. But that’s why I’m not a scriptwriter, I suppose.
