A24 Cancels the Most Anticipated Horror Franchise Revival of 2024 … Or Did They?

Almost two years ago in October 2022, horror fans across the globe rejoiced as A24 and Peacock announced that they were taking on horror titan Jason Voorhees with a Friday the 13th series titled Crystal Lake. But now, it seems that Jason may not resurface after all.

A24 is a rising star in the horror landscape, with the studio already three films deep in its own X series. The third film, Maxxxine (pictured), is set to hit theaters this summer. But word on the street is that the studio is interested in bigger franchise fish to fry. This is where Friday the 13th entered the chat.

According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, A24 has reportedly “pulled the plug” on the series. Sneider wrote in his newsletter,  “It’s unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one, as A24 had no comment. Perhaps Peacock will help the trades shed more light on this project, which was announced back in 2022.”

On the heels of this news, Bloody Disgusting reached out to their sources and learned that the series was not in fact canceled, but rather shelved as “some retooling of the project happen[s] behind the scenes”. As stated by Sneider, neither A24 nor Peacock has made a public statement yet regarding the status of Crystal Lake.

Previously, Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) was slated to be the series writer, showrunner, and executive producer. But after accusations made by Sam Wineman regarding Fuller’s conduct on the set of the Shudder original documentary Queer For Fear, while not confirmed, Fuller may no longer be attached to the project, which would lead to these reported delays.

Culture writer Eric Goldman also previously tweeted that production was on track, revealing original star Adrienne King would be appearing and Scream scribe Kevin Williamson was also involved: “They officially start writing in 2 weeks. It will have two scores to choose from – a modern one and a classic Manfredini one. Kevin Williamson is writing an episode. Adrienne King will have a recurring role.”

“Fuller has pitched four seasons for Crystal Lake. Only one officially ordered so far though he notes Peacock would have to pay a pretty hefty penalty if they didn’t order a Season 2,” Goldman’s thread continues. “Asked if he can confirm Pamela’s role in the Crystal Lake series, Fuller replied “We’re honestly going to be covering it all. The series is covering the life and times of these two characters” (presumably he’s referring to Pamela and Jason there!).”

So it sounds like there’s still hope for Jason to rise once again from the depths of Crystal Lake to terrorize teenagers. Fingers crossed we’ll get this new series sooner rather than later.
