Williamson Talks More Scream 4

The horror genre has undergone quite a few changes since Scream single-handedly rescued the genre from box office oblivion back in the mid 90s (I can’t believe it’s been over ten years already) so news of a fourth film has really piqued Dread Central’s curiosity. Will Scream 4 be in line with the gorier, nastier flicks that came after the self-referential trilogy, or can we expect some good-natured winking to accompany our slashing? We’ve got an answer for you.

The New York Post’s PopWrap talked to writer Kevin Williamson about the looming fourth film in the franchise: ”The thing about ‘Scream 4’ is that there are a lot of twists and turns, so I can’t promise anything”, meaning any of our returning characters might not live to see another sequel beyond 4.

Commenting on the changes within the horror genre, Williamson said the following: “I’ve [included] manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, there’s some PG-13 horror movies in there, vampire movies, M. Night Shyamalan movies and torture porn movies, even though they’ve come and gone.” And while it seems like that might give the film a jokey feel, the writer is quick to alleviate the concern: “You have to be careful because ‘Scary Movie’ spoofed these films, so one of the things I’m excited about with ‘Scream 4’ is that, while we do lampoon and send up the genre, [we] make it incredibly scary. That’s first and foremost.”

Color me intrigued.

Scream 4 Synopsis
The horror series that reignited the genre and grossed more than $500 million worldwide is back! From Kevin Williamson, creator of the original Scream trilogy, the new film sees the return of cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette along with a group of new stars, who can all hopefully stay alive long enough to figure out the new rules to this one-of-a-kind horror franchise!

“So while we do lampoon and send up the genre…” – and with those words my heart sank, as I began to sense that this is potentially going to be worse than “Scream 3”; were that even possible!

    • The Woman In Black

I don’t know — I’m holding on to the second part of his statement: “[we] make it incredibly scary. That’s first and foremost.” A few send-ups are expected and tolerable as long as the scares are there as well.

So is Craven not involved at all?

    • The Woman In Black

I’m pretty sure he’s still in talks to direct — probably waiting to see the finished script.
