Guillermo del Toro Talks Low-Budget Passion Project Silva; Wrestler vs. Vampires

One of my favorite characters introduced in the second season of “The Strain” was Angel Guzman Hurtado, a beaten-down man who used to be a Mexican wrestler/fictional vampire-slayer by the name of “The Silver Angel.” If Guillermo del Toro has his way, a similar character may soon tangle with vamps on the big screen.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the visionary filmmaker mostly talked about Crimson Peak, headed to theaters this coming weekend, but he also spoke briefly about a movie idea that’s been rattling around in his brain for many years – long before he ever even came to America.

Titled Silva, the passion project centers on a masked Mexican wrestler who discovers that all politicians are blood-sucking vampires. Del Toro, who wants to focus on smaller, weirder movies going forward, envisions the film as a low-budget affair, shot entirely in black and white.

The original plan was to make Silva many years ago in Mexico, though Del Toro’s career over there came to an end when his family was forced to flee the country and head for Toronto. The move was made after his father was kidnapped and the family had to fork over a massive ransom amount.

Could Silva someday soon come to life on the silver screen? Here’s hoping!
