Folks who were enjoying an early stroll near Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, Australia, last Thursday morning were treated to a sight straight out of a horror movie: an undertaker riding a coffin adorned with flowers across the lake. Dressed in a black suit and a top hat, the mysterious stranger rode a stand-up paddle coffin through the thick fog. Not surprisingly, more than a few people were baffled — and possibly a little creeped out — by this admittedly odd scenario.

According to Mashable, the stranger is known as The Lost Undertaker. Despite all of the press he’s received from around the world since his unexpected journey across Lake Burley Griffin, he’s not seeking fame and fortune. In fact, he’d rather people just left him alone.

In a recent email to Mashable, The Lost Undertaker explained, “Unlike Superman, Robin Hood, Zorro, Spiderman, Batman and Wonderwoman, who all revealed their identity to the detriment of their purpose; The Lost Undertaker wishes to hide his true identity. His purpose is to give hope to the oppressed and put the fear of God into the oppressors, villains and rogues that surround us all. He appears and searches out cemeteries with spare lots available for such oppressors. If you are at all a villain or a rogue be warned he may appear near you.”

Fortunately for those of us who missed The Lost Undertaker’s spooky fog-shrouded adventure, a few people snapped photos of the mysterious stranger’s appearance.

Since The Lost Undertaker isn’t someone who enjoys the spotlight or all that pesky media attention, it’s unknown if he’ll make an another journey across an Australian lake anytime soon. Regardless, chances are folks will be on the lookout for his next creepy appearance.
