Friday the 13th Makes a Killing at the Box Office

Jason flexes box office muscleIn a good turn of events for R-rated horror, Platinum Dunes’ reboot (the new, classier, way to say remake) of “>Friday the 13th has scared itself up some big box office this weekend, raking in an estimated 42 million, plus!

This bodes well for our genre. It truly does, but it’s also a bit of a double edged sword. What with Platinum Dunes’ A Nightmare of Elm Street officially on the horizon, I’m sure all the other studios are already scrambling to look for the next property they can cash-in on. Hopefully there will be some room left for original horror as well. We can only pray.

Say what you will about the new Friday, and, man, do I have a lot to say (you’re going to have to wait on that), it’s good to see the man in the hockey mask ruling the weekend with an iron machete.

I’ve read the reactions, and I’m still a little confused as to what everyone was expecting with this movie. I had a great time with it, the crowd was hot, we all had a lot of fun. The kills weren’t super imaginative, but watching all manner of attractive young people die brought me back to my youth. I was wary because of my distaste for the TCM remake, but this time Platinum Dunes just went out and made a FRIDAY THE 13TH movie, as good as the early parts of the original series. Hell, Part 6 is one of the most popular, and that whole movie devotes its running time to condescending to its audience, a stance that the new one happily avoids.

I don’t know. I think horror fans expected way too much, without much reason to. “It’s not that difficult to make a FRIDAY THE 13th,” I’ve read over and over as a criticism. Well, near as I can tell, that’s exactly what they did.

I’m torn because it’s wonderful that a Friday the 13th movie made that much money on its opening weekend. I just wish it was a better film that was reaping all of the benefits. Go mediocre Jason!
