‘The Strangers’ Trilogy: Everything You Need To Know From New York Comic Con

Director Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea, Die Hard 2, A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: Dream Masters), and producer Courtney Solomon took the stage at New York Comic Con to tease the fans with some early footage, and set the record straight for what The Strangers Trilogy will feed to horror fans when it drops next year. Here’s what we know so far:
The Strangers Trilogy is invested in honoring Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers (2008). Harlin and Solomon made it clear that the title will be a “reboot, not a carbon copy”, but will hold on to the core values of its source material. Solomon noted how important it was to avoid manipulating the audience because “It’s the reality in these movies that is so powerful” to which Harlin added “In these movies, bigger is not better”, just like it was done back in ‘08.
The duo is definitely aware of how the term “trilogy” generates some slight worry within the horror community these days. But they’re equal parts confident and excited for the way the story will be executed. Renny Harlin recalled, “…when Courtney sent me the script for The Strangers (Trilogy), I flipped out… The interesting thing about the script is that when I opened the file it was 280 pages long”.

The Strangers Trilogy was written and shot as one grand story- not three. The first scene of part two will be the next consecutive scene from the ending of part one, and so on. No big cliffhangers, just a continuation with every chapter becoming more epic and dreadful than the last. The best thing about this news is that if everything goes according to plan, each film will be released within months of each other. This could be essential for keeping fans engaged and hungry.
Our hopeful final girl is played by Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale), and as a fan of the original, she seems to have had more of an impact on the trilogy than we would assume. The con-goers were blessed with three clips of Mads in action, but here’s just one from The Strangers: Chapter 1.
The Q&A portion was hitting heavy, and the horror heads were not holding back their questions. Like rapid-fire before the 60-minute panel slot was up, it was revealed that the trilogy will be deeply character-driven, featuring the perspectives of the protagonists and antagonists. We’ll also finally get to understand the true origins of Dollface, Pin-Up Girl, the Man In The Mask, and their sadistic rituals by the end of chapter three.
“What we saw the opportunity to do was reboot the original, make some changes, and ultimately answer a lot of questions and create some new ones,” said Solomon.
