John McNaughton’s 1986 film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which was loosely based on the exploits on real life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole, was an unflinching and terrifying look at just how evil we as people can be. After many decades its star, Michael Rooker, and McNaughton are re-teaming for the tale of another psychopath.

Deadline reports that the duo have come together for a film adaptation of Flannery O’Connor’s 1955 short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find. The Passion of the Christ scribe Benedict Fitzgerald wrote the screenplay.

The O’Conner story, a duel between “The Grandmother” and an escaped convict known as “The Misfit,” has long been the subject of many essays and is revered as a literary classic. Given the subject matter of a planned vacation gone completely awry and the chops of both McNaughton and Rooker, this may very well turn into a filmic classic as well.

Ed Richardson is producing A Good Man Is Hard to Find under his Atlanta-based R&R Productions Worldwide, along with David Zander and Mike Sears.

More as it comes.
