Not to be confused with Syfy.
Another favorite genre of mine from when I was a wee lad watching Space 1999 and the original Battlestar Galactica as well as Star Wars.
Star Trek came in to compete with Star Wars and comparing the two franchises Trek gives Wars a beat down. Then again I only like 2 Star Wars movies, A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. I don't watch the others. I hate Ewoks. Star Trek on the other hand has some truly excellent films both from TOS and Next Generation. The Wrath of Khan is more enjoyable a watch to me the The Empire Strikes Back these days especially in HD.
So many sci-fi movies and so many I'm going to forget but some of my favorites

Sunshine (even though I hate Boyle this was good)

2001 (truly prophetic)
2010 (A very well made sequel to the great 2001)

Star Wars isn't really pure science fiction. It's a fantasy film that just uses a science fiction location. For science fiction to be pure science fiction the science has to propel the fiction so much so that without it, the same story can't be told.
The story in Star Wars can be told in any setting. A boy grows up on a farm, meets an old wizard and sets out to rescue the princess from the evil king in his dark castle. Along the way he meets a motley cast of characters that aide him in his quest. The robots, aliens, lasers and space travel don't impact the themes or the point of the story in any way.
In that regard, Star Trek is true science fiction.

Not gonna post an entire list here...But The Fifth Element and Dark City are two of my favorite movies of all time....Dark City...Watching that tonight.

My definition of Sci-fi is pretty encompassing. Anything having to do with space travel/exploration, Aliens, the future, advanced technology or branches of Science.
Science more often than not just functions as escapist fantasy in films, which doesn't really help any greater understanding. The greatest filmic Sci-fi work ever is Sagan's Cosmos. Which I can't recommend highly enough to anyone who has even a vague interest in any of the motifs glossed over in favor of sensationalism in cinema.
Honda is probably my favorite Sci-fi director. His films are microcosms where myth and science collide. Themes relevant now as ever...

I never liked Darko...I tried....I have seen it 3 times and just couldn't really get into it..its an ok movie, just not my thing.
The Fifth Element...another Blu-Ray must buy....

| Donnie Darko is more than a tad overrated. It's a decent film with a great central idea and story, but as a whole, the movie is rather dull. |

I've never heard of one or seen one but I am positive that you can get a region free Blu-ray player. |

What I would like to see is Metropolis with the updated soundtrack although I guess it's pretty chopped up. It will be interesting to see what comes of the lost footage they found last year.

Most of the good Sci-Fi films have already been listed. I know of one awful Sci-Fi film that you guys probably haven't seen or heard of. The title of the picture is Leviathan; it was directed by George P. Cosmatos.
Never have I seen such a piss-poor imitation of Alien. There's even a fucking self-destruct sequence at the end! The design of the creature is gut-bustingly hilarious too. I could not believe that the great Stan Winston created such a cheap looking, goofy monster. This monster is akin to something from the Power Rangers show. The ending is one for the books too. Have you ever seen Peter Weller utter the words, "Take that mother fucker!"? Well, you must. It was a really good laugh. |
