New Netflix Docuseries Is Bringing Viewers To Tears: “One of the best docu[mentaries] they have ever released”

Netflix Unlocked

Netflix doesn’t play when it comes to documentaries and documentary series. But their latest is a fascinating merging of docuseries and reality TV. Unlocked: A Jail Experiment recently premiered on the streamer and documents a social experiment unfolding at the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In Unlocked: A Jail Experiment, “At an Arkansas detention facility, a sheriff implements a radical social experiment to grant men who are incarcerated more agency in this reality series.

Watch the trailer below:

This experiment was born from the mind of Arkansas Sheriff Eric Higgins. The goal, according to an article in Tudum, “was to determine if more autonomy and less control in jails can lead to a more community-oriented living environment and better support one of the fundamental purposes of incarceration: discouraging people from committing future crimes.”

In that same article, Higgins spoke about his idea and how it played out across the six-week experiment. “They stepped up. They recognized that they can improve their environment. And the majority of the people in the unit did the right thing from Day 1,” he said.

This innovative approach to prison reform has generated a slew of reactions online, mostly in regards to seeing people actually give incarcerated men a chance to prove themselves. So often, incarcerated folks are treated like cattle and disregarded by those in power. Prisons essentially operate via government-mandated slave labor, after all.
