Bob Sapp Turns Undead Baller in Frankenhood

FrankenhoodThis one isn’t really horror, more an urban comedy with a monstrous twist. But when a movie comes along called Frankenhood about a pair of streetball players that recruit a mad scientist to build them a franken-baller in order to win the big 3-on-3 tournament, I feel that deserves some notice.

Here’s the synopsis for this new classic from the first-time director going by the name Blaxwell Smart(!):

Motown (DeRay Davis) and Darius (Jasper Redd) work in a morgue, trading put-downs and toiling among the most undemanding of customers. But outside of their decidedly dreary jobs, the two dream of bigger and better things. If only they could win the $25,000 prize that will go to the winners of the upcoming 3-on-3 Streetball Tournament. One night, having been demoted to graveyard shift, they run into their semi-sane colleague Franklin (Charlie Murphy) in a dark alley outside the morgue. They find Franklin using the auto battery of Motown’s precious Gremlin to bring to life a monstrous dead man (Bob Sapp) whose heart Franklin has just replaced. That 3-on-3 basketball tournament isn’t looking so bad…if they can just get their new mutant friend to play basketball!

Oh, Lionsgate, only you could bring us a Blackenstein streetball comedy. Only you could think to cast comedian Charlie Murphy as a mad Dr. Frankenstein morgue technician. Only you could think to cast Bob Sapp as a slam-dunking Frankenstein’s monster.

Hang on.

Bob Sapp as a basketball player is an odd choice, reanimated corpse or not. You familiar with Bob “The Beast” Sapp? Ex-football player who went to the land of the Rising Son to compete in mixed martial arts tournaments and for a time there became one of the biggest pop culture phenoms in all of Japan? Perhaps you may remember him as the enormous black ninja henchmen that got a tree dropped on him in Elektra? The guy is like 6’4″ and close to four hundred pounds. He’s built to perform body slams, not slam dunks.

Frankenhood will be on your local DVD shelf come May 5th. If we’re lucky, by then someone will have also released The Minis – another new basketball comedy with Dennis Rodman leading an all-midget basketball team into a streetball tournament – on DVD and we can all enjoy one hell of a double feature.

Say, this reminds me; whatever became of that Frankenthug movie I reported on years ago?
