Today we’re excited to bring you the exclusive music video premiere of “Black Sunday” from dark rockers Volker! The video mixes a weird, almost Victorian-style aesthetic with obvious horror love.

If you’ve been looking for a new dark Gothic punk/rock band, I think this is going to be right up your alley, so be sure to check it out as well as give our interview with the band a read!

The French band, which is fronted by Jen Nyx, released their latest album, Dead Doll, at the end of May, so make sure you pick up a copy via Bandcamp.

Dread Central: Black Sunday is the name of a Mario Bava Gothic horror film. Is there any reference to that film or did you take inspiration from it?

Volker: It’s more a partial inspiration. The VOLKER song is not the story of the movie. In fact, when I composed the track and sent it to Jen, the music inspired her to write something about witches and sorcery. At this time she realized the link with Bava’s movie. This is why she decided to title the song “Black Sunday”; we found it to be fitting. VOLKER is inspired by old horror and creepy shit in general, not particular movies. We love the song so much we made a video. The imagery was perfect to make it interesting. We chose to use a “retro” finish, just an old horror movie, as Mario Bava’s Black Sunday. I hope the audience will appreciate it.

DC: There’s obviously a love of horror in Volker. Can you talk a bit about the influence the genre plays on your music and aesthetic?

Volker: We are all inspired by 80/90’s horror. Since the beginning, Jen wanted to incorporate this horror influence into the band. We try to make each song sound like a small horror story. Each song is more or less connected; this makes the entire album looks like a short story collection. It resembles “Tales from the Crypt.” I focused specifically on each guitar riff, guitar lead and drum pattern. I want to make you feel horror or make you think about horror. You close your eyes, listen to the music and let yourself travel within the dead, the ghosts and spirits.

A band is not only the music… it’s also the aesthetic. We always take care of our imagery both in pictures and on stage. It is imperative that our imagery fits the music. We are working on new stage looks, outfits and elements, something darker for the upcoming shows. Give us a limitless budget, and I can transform the stage to a real horror scene with zombies and fire as King Diamond! We would love it.

DC: Tell me about Dead Doll and what people should expect when putting it on?

Volker: Dead Doll is a rock/horror-punk/metal crossover, it resembles a modernized Misfits with female vocals. A way to describe it would be a sensual Kvelertak, ha ha!

You will find in Dead Doll some punk rock/metal vibes (e.g., freaky bride, Voodoo baby) that will make you dance with the dead. However, you will also plunge into darkness, within the souls, accompanied by pounding sludge ambiances. Dead Doll contains some atmospheric tracks with a big dark and black metal music background (e.g., Raven, Yell). We love the fact that VOLKER can offer these two different kinds of music. Okay, there’s a female, but don’t expect to listen to some heavy metal symphonic sound!

DC: What’s next on the table for Volker?

Volker: We are working on booking things. We are trying to perform as many shows as possible. I started to compose for the next album as well. We have a lot of creepy things in store for the fans!
