Netflix Now Streaming Stephen King’s Most Monstrous Thriller!

These days, the once-masterful horror filmmaker John Carpenter is essentially spending his time playing Dead Space (and working on next year’s game, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando). He hasn’t helmed a feature film since 2010 (The Ward), and while he’s still composing and producing, I’m not confident we’ll ever see Carpenter behind the camera again in full, feature form. That makes his back catalogue all the more worthwhile to revisit, especially when his talents are paired with the literary mastery of Stephen King. Big fan of killer cars? Good news. Christine is now streaming in Netflix’s expansive library.

The gist, for those who don’t know, is simple. The eponymous Christine is a possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury willing to kill anyone and everyone who gets in its way. You might be thinking, “A possessed car? How is that scary?” Well, trust me, it is, and it’s a helluva lot of fun, too. It’s one of Carpenter’s most confident directorial outings, and the score he contributed ranks among his best. It’s no Halloween, but it’s pretty damned close. No one does it quite like John Carpenter.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Christine even cracked the Top 10 for the best-reviewed Stephen King adaptations of all time. Former Dread Central contributor Sharai Bohannon writes, “The tale of a boy and his cursed car had no business being as good as it is. Of all the horror movies centered on murderous vehicles, Christine is the only one to truly understand what it means to be hell on wheels. She is a lean, mean, killing machine. We must stan.” We must stan, indeed. The things I’d do for a 1958 Plymouth Fury… I’m kidding. Well, I’m mostly kidding.

Christine, then, is both a Carpenter and King classic, and one you can luckily catch on streaming now. It’s the perfect antidote to some of King’s more recent adaptations, including The Monkey and The Long Walk. Those are grim and upsetting (but great). Christine is a palate cleanser. It’s juiced-up vehicular fury with so much 1980s sheen, you’ll be caught like a deer in headlights. Whether it’s your first or tenth time watching it, Christine is well worth revisiting.
