‘Frankenstein’ Director Guillermo del Toro Says Always Has Time To Watch This Free-to-Stream Thriller

I love a good survival thriller. I have seen Deliverance more times than I can count. I traumatized myself repeatedly as a child by obsessively re-watching Alive. And I even dedicated an installment of my Dread Central column, The Overlooked Motel, to A Lonely Place to Die. So, it brings me great pleasure to get the chance to share the good news about The Edge, a gripping ‘90s survival thriller endorsed by the great Guillermo del Toro.
The Edge is an action-packed affair that makes great use of the snowy, isolated Alaskan locale where the proceedings are set. Not to mention, the picture features a great cast, with Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins each appearing in a lead role.

Hopkins plays Charles, a wealthy businessman, and Baldwin plays Robert, a photographer who seems a little too cozy with Charles’ wife, Mickey (Elle Macpherson). After their plane crashes, Charles must face the elements, the local wildlife, and Robert, who seems to have designs on eliminating Charles so he can have Mickey all to himself.
Despite a great setup, the film underperformed at the box office. However, The Edge eventually found an audience when it bowed on VHS. I can’t say for sure when del Toro first discovered the film, but I can safely report that it’s one he’ll always watch when he happens upon it via cable or streaming. That much is apparent from a previous X (formerly Twitter) post espousing his appreciation for the picture.
Here’s what Guillermo del Toro has to say about The Edge:
I’ve seen the film quite a few times, and I concur that The Edge has infinite replay value. The film has a thoughtful predator and prey dynamic that plays out when the core cast runs afoul of a Kodiak bear, as well as in the increasingly contentious relationship between Robert and Charles.
As del Toro posits, the film also benefits from well-written dialogue and an effective narrative structure. If del Toro’s glowing endorsement has you eager to stream the film, you are in luck. The Edge is currently available to watch for free (with ads) via Tubi.
Stay tuned to Dread Central in the near future for more quality recommendations from your favorite filmmakers. And if you endeavor to experience The Edge, make sure to let us know what you thought in the comments section below. We’re always curious to hear from our readers.
