HBO Max Is Now Streaming Devastating “Top-Tier Crime Series” Fans Can’t Watch Without Crying

I have a list of what I call hotel shows. You know the kind. You’re somewhere new, maybe for work, maybe for recreation, and when you settle in for the evening, you’re left with whatever is airing on local cable stations. Odds are, you settle on some early aughts crime show. Maybe some Forensic Files. Perhaps you dabble in some Law & Order. Maybe the gore of Bones does it. Or, if you’re anything like me (and current HBO Max subscribers), you squeal with delight when you catch a rerun of Cold Case.
Meredith Stiehm’s series is currently in the Top 10 on the HBO Max streaming charts. Pretty remarkable for an oft-overlooked crime procedural, if you ask me. It’s also something that speaks deeply to me, especially as someone who grew up enraptured by the many fictionalized cold cases the modern-day detectives endeavored to solve. They were often tragic, and I cried a lot. It’s arguably one of the most heartbreaking procedurals ever, and you can check it out in full for yourself now on HBO Max.

Cold Case, like the title implies, principally follows Detective Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris) and her adjacent homicide detectives whose specialties are exclusively cold cases, those investigations no longer actively pursued. Structurally, there’s usually some new piece of evidence discovered, inciting a blast from the past foray into what went down 10, 20, or even 50 years ago. The present investigation is interwoven with scenes from the past, imbuing Cold Case with a distinct, dual-timeline structure that few, if any, crime procedurals possess.
Audiences online have been thrilled to rediscover the series. I know I am. For the uninitiated, Cold Case has had streaming trouble before, largely on account of expired music licenses. The Smashing Pumpkins aren’t cheap, okay? With the arrival on HBO Max, I have an option besides cracking open my dated DVD collection of the series in full. Check out some choice reactions to the series below:
I can’t make it through without crying either. And, yeah, it’s a top-tier crime show. It’s designed to be binged, and now that it’s streaming, you can do just that. Check out an early trailer for the series below:
