Nicolas Cage Summons the Devil and Cracks the Netflix Top 10!

How great have the past few years been for Nicolas Cage? As a baby cinephile in the early aughts who earnestly enjoyed titles like The Wicker Man and Con Air, I was bummed when a mixture of personal and professional obstacles all but derailed Cage’s career. For a long while, the acclaimed actor was little more than a meme, a go-to point of derision. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Season of the Witch are better known as bottom-barrel Cage offerings than anything else.
Luckily, the career setbacks didn’t last long. In 2018, Cage starred in Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy, and the rest is really history. Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space was a delight, and Michael Sarnoski’s Pig is a genuine masterpiece. Now, Cage is pretty much everywhere, and it’s been nothing short of a miracle. I love seeing Cage pop up in random comedies and Oz Perkins horror movies. I think everyone else does, too, since one of Cage’s most-derided titles recently cracked the Top 10 on Netflix. You’ll never guess what it is. Learn more below:
Per Netflix: Still possessed by the demon that turns him into a flame-spewing Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze must track down a boy who may be the devil’s spawn.
Yes, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is a certified streaming hit. This is a movie that bombed at the international box office and scored an abysmal 18% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, somehow, it has captivated audiences online. And you know what? Good for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. As someone who grew up in the era of D-tier superhero offerings—think Elektra and Catwoman—I have an unadulterated appreciation for that era of ass-kicking, costumed baddies. Are they good? Not by conventional standards, but as gonzo camp, they’re excellent.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance might be a sequel to 2007’s Ghost Rider, but you don’t need to have seen (or remembered) the first for the follow-up to make sense. Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) sold his soul to the demon lord and now turns into the titular Ghost Rider. That’s it. The rest will follow from that. Check out what some fans have had to say about Spirit of Vengeance below:
