A New ‘Onslaught’ Tease Has ‘The Guest’ Fans Losing Their Minds
Adam Wingard is returning to his roots.
After spending the last several years navigating the studio system with blockbuster hits like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the filmmaker is back in the genre playground that made him a fan favorite. Teaming once again with longtime collaborator Simon Barrett, Wingard’s latest film, Onslaught, looks like a return to the scrappy, ultra-violent energy that defined projects such as V/H/S, You’re Next, and the cult classic The Guest.
Mentioning The Guest is particularly relevant here because fans have spent more than a decade clamoring for a sequel to the 2014 action-thriller. Written by Barrett and directed by Wingard, the film starred Dan Stevens as David, a mysterious soldier who inserts himself into the life of a grieving family before revealing far more sinister motives. The film has since developed a devoted following, with both Stevens and Wingard expressing interest in revisiting the character over the years.
While a direct sequel has never materialized, Onslaught may be the next best thing.
The new A24 action-horror film follows a former Army sniper and single mother who must protect her daughter and community after a squad of genetically engineered super soldiers escapes from a secret military facility. The premise immediately evokes memories of The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, with a relentless army of enhanced killers hunting down a badass female protagonist.
In many ways, Onslaught feels like Wingard and Barrett taking the DNA of The Guest and expanding it into something bigger, louder, and even more explosive. If The Guest was a sleek synth-soaked thriller, Onslaught appears to be its spiritual cousin… packed with gunfire, carnage, and larger-than-life action set pieces.
That connection hasn’t gone unnoticed by Stevens himself. Earlier today, the actor shared what appears to be promotional artwork for The Guest that matches the art for Onslaught, sending fans into speculation mode. Was it simply a playful nod to one of his most beloved roles? A tease for a long-awaited sequel? Or could Onslaught secretly share DNA with The Guest in ways audiences haven’t yet discovered? Stevens’ involvement has fueled online theories, especially given that he reunites with Wingard once again for the film.
Whatever the answer, the newly released trailer is an absolute blast. Overflowing with brutal action, practical mayhem, and the kind of unapologetically pulpy energy that fans have come to expect from a Wingard-Barrett collaboration, Onslaught looks poised to be one of the wildest genre releases of the year.
