Sam Raimi Animal Attack Movie Now Charting on Paramount+ Has Sequel in the Works : “It’s a blast”

Alexandre Aja’s alligator survival thriller Crawl made a serious splash when it hit theaters in 2019, pulling in over $90 million worldwide against a lean budget just north of $13 million. The tight, mean creature feature has real bite, and now the film is clawing its way back into the spotlight.

Aja’s film is currently trending on Paramount+, landing in the platform’s Top 10 streaming chart today. This isn’t all that surprising. The renewed attention also comes as talk of a sequel lingers in the background.

Producer Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) has previously confirmed that a follow-up is still in development, even if progress has been slow. Speaking to The Wrap during press for Send Help, Raimi noted that studio shifts at Paramount Pictures temporarily stalled momentum, but that there’s renewed interest from the current studio bosses.

“We’ve been trying to get a go from the studio… and now the new group that’s come in… they’re interested in Crawl 2. That’s all I could really say right now, is now I’ve got a new hope to make it,” Raimi said.

He also didn’t shy away from the film’s pulpy premise, leaning into what makes Crawl work in the first place. “It’s a little bit, I think, embarrassing to make an alligator in the basement picture… but I think there’s a crowd that loves those kinds of films. Yes, it’s a B movie, but it’s a blast.”

Whether or not Crawl 2 ultimately moves forward, the original film’s return to the charts is good news for fans. And if Paramount+ viewers keep pushing it up the rankings, that might be the clearest signal the studio needs…
