KPop Demon Hunters is nothing short of a phenomenon. You couldn’t go anywhere in the last year without someone mentioning it, humming it, or flat-out belting one of its many musical numbers. While a sequel was first discussed last July and officially confirmed in November of last year, we can now report that Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to direct the sequel. Presently, Netflix anticipates a release after 2029 (less Golden, I know).

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang remarked. “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

Appelhans says, “These characters are like family to us; their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”

KPop Demon Hunters surpassed 500 million views on Netflix, making it the most-watched Netflix film of all time on the global charts. Additionally, the film secured two Oscar nominations: one for Best Animated Film, and the second for Best Original Song (Golden).

Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, who wrote the film alongside Kang and Appelhans, are additionally attached to Tim Burton’s remake of Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman. There’s no word yet on whether they’re returning to help script the sequel.

Get Golden, and stay tuned to Dread Central as the sequel news develops.
