This July, IDW Publishing is dropping The Horror of Godzilla, an all-new comic book series that promises to be the scariest take on the King of the Monsters yet.

Set in 1954 Japan, the comics rewind to humanity’s first encounter with Godzilla and explore the emotional terror of that initial attack. At the center of the chaos is the mysterious Kai-Sei energy, which does far more than level cities… it transforms the people caught in its blast in ways that sound genuinely nightmarish…

The series comes from Eisner-nominated co-writers Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan, known for Marvel Zombies: Red Band and Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, alongside horror artist Tristan Jones, whose past work includes Event Horizon: Dark Descent and Aliens: Defiance.

Jones, a lifelong Godzilla fan, says the project is a career highlight and that the team is leaning harder into horror imagery than ever before! If you loved the darker tone of Godzilla Minus One, this one sounds made for you.

The Horror of Godzilla #1 hits comic shops in July. It’s being framed as a return to narrative ground zero in the Kai-Sei saga, meaning it’s essentially an origin era story centered on humanity’s first encounter with Godzilla.

You’ll be getting your hands on it this summer courtesy of IDW Publishing.
