Star of New ‘Resident Evil’ From ‘Weapons’ Director Zach Cregger Says You Will Be “Blown away”

Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country) is ready for some biohazard nightmares. While promoting Mercy, the genre star offered a exciting peek into one of the most anticipated horror projects of 2026: Zach Cregger’s (dir. Weapons) upcoming Resident Evil reboot.
Following the massive critical and commerical successes of Barbarian andWeapons, Cregger is now headed to Raccoon City. But according to Reis, fans shouldn’t expect a shot-for-shot remake of the 1996 PlayStation classic.
Reis, who joins the high-profile reboot was quick to praise Cregger’s unique vision for the franchise. Rather than retreading the same hallways of the Spencer Mansion, Reis suggests the film will be a “continuation of great filmmaking” that highlights Cregger’s specific skillsets.
“I will say, for the Resident Evil fans, especially people who are gamers, his crack at an origin story his version of this is amazing,” Reis told ScreenRant. “I think you guys are going to be blown away by his imagination, his ideas, and this kind of comedic kind of journey through this crazy wild time in this Resident Evil story.”
The Resident Evil franchise has famously had a touch time to find a middle ground between the action-heavy Milla Jovovich era and the more lore-accurate—but commercially underwhelming—Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) from Primate director Johannes Roberts.
Reis emphasizes that the Cregger’s “imagination” is the driving force here, promising a shift that could catch longtime fans off guard.
“I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised,” Reis added.
