‘Sweetness’ Exclusive Trailer & Poster Debut Turns Idol Worship Into Dark Obsession [Watch]

Today Dread Central is psyched to exclusively debut the official trailer for Sweetness, a slick new thriller from Saban Films, arriving on digital platforms Friday, February 13. The movie marks the feature debut of writer-director Emma Higgins, and it wastes no time digging into the dark psychology of obsession, celebrity worship, and control.
Sweetness follows a devoted superfan who becomes convinced that her rock star idol is spiraling into addiction. Believing she’s the only one who can truly save him, she inserts herself into his life with increasingly dangerous resolve—whether he wants help or not. When her plan collapses, she kidnaps him in a delusional attempt to “fix” him, transforming compassion into captivity and love into something far more terrifying.
After an buzzy launch at SXSW earlier last year, Sweetness quickly became one of the most talked-about upcoming indie chillers, praised for its distinct style, perspective and refusal to soften its subject matter.
In Dread Central’s 4-star review out of the film’s SXSW premiere, Mary Beth McAndrews compared Sweetness to Misery, writing:
“Higgins nails the obsessed fan with skill, crafting a character reminiscent of Annie Wilkes, but a bit more empathetic in her actions. This is a worthy addition to the pop star horror trend, especially with its focus on the perspective of the violent fan … The production design, set decoration, and makeup (led by Electa Porado, Juliana Bergen, and Elyse Marion, respectively) further elevate the film’s world-building.
Watch the exclusive trailer below—and prepare for one of the year’s most uncomfortably intimate thrillers when Sweetness arrives this February 13th. Just in time for Valentine’s Day.
