Magnolia Pictures set the Internet on fire when they dropped the trailer for their upcoming religious horror film,The Carpenter’s Son. Conservative Christians are up in arms, crying foul at the idea of a film depicting a teenage Jesus (Noah Jupe) tempted by a mysterious playmate (Isla Johnston) later revealed to be a juvenile version of the devil.

Many who have watched the trailer have come away outraged and disgusted. In fact, in the hours since the preview emerged online, we’ve already seen a call to action to boycott Nicolas Cage for his participation in the project. The actor plays Jesus’ father, Joseph, in the film, which is based on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. That text isn’t an accepted Biblical gospel, and its authenticity has long been called into question.

In yet another surprising casting choice, recording artist FKA twigs will round out the lineup as Joseph’s wife, Mary.

I’m sure your curiosity is piqued at this point, so why not check out the trailer in the player below to see if you’re as offended as some of the film’s biggest detractors.

What is The Carpenter’s Son about?

A remote village in Egypt explodes into spiritual warfare when a carpenter, his wife, and their son, Jesus, are targeted by supernatural forces.

Writer/director Lotfy Nathan reportedly took inspiration for The Carpenter’s Son from his Coptic Christian background. Nathan’s religious ties seem to be of little comfort to those who have taken issue with the trailer, however.

Although the film isn’t yet available for public consumption, that hasn’t stopped detractors from writing speculative critiques trashing the picture via Google Reviews. With more than 100 reviews published so far, the picture sits at an approval rating of just 1.3 out of 5.

While the majority of those making noise online have been outspoken in their criticism, a minority faction appears to be genuinely amused by the outrage surrounding the film.
