In this latest episode, Kim and Ket finish their two-parter on Ryan Coogler’s Sinners while serving up a heaping helping of vampire expertise, unabashed celebrity swooning (looking at you, Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld), plenty of laughs, and a giant bouquet of well-deserved flowers for Wunmi Mosaku’s character, Annie.
Set in 1932 Clarksdale, Mississippi, Sinners follows twins Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan in dual roles) as they return home from Chicago, flush with mystery cash. Looking to start fresh, the pair open a juke joint and quickly find themselves caught up with a sinister, seductive vampiric force. Before long, Smoke, Stack, their cousin Sammie, and a full joint of friends and locals find themselves confronting temptation, grief, and the costs of survival. In other words, a perfect film for our gals to contend with.
While their Part 1 episode laid the narrative groundwork and established the film’s main characters, this Part 2 discussion wraps the story and digs into what makes Sinners one of the year’s best films. With plenty of surprise reveals and unexpected narrative twists, gasps abound as Kim and Ket discuss why the film’s worldbuilding pays off emotionally, the alluring pull of the vampyre, and the sweet, unbreakable bond of brotherly love.
