This “Cruel and Scary” Creature Feature Tops the HBO Max Charts

I was as surprised as anyone else when Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus was released last year. In terms of horror icons with a foot in this century, the xenomorph has struggled more than most. Ridley Scott’s Prometheus was a moderate success, though that’s debatably not an Alien movie, at least not in all the ways that count most. The receipts were enough to greenlight Alien: Covenant five years later, though that entry was decidedly a flop. Not critically, of course, but financially, it seemed to be the final nail in the Alien coffin.

It’s remarkable, then, to see the series reemerge several years later. Alien: Romulus was a hit, and Noah Hawley’s prequel series Alien: Earth is the real deal. The xenomorph has lived up to its name, perfectly evolving to remain an imposing threat almost fifty years after it was first set upon the crew of the Nostromo. Recently, Alien: Earth has no doubt reignited interest in the franchise as a whole, and the aforementioned Alien: Covenant is feeling the love. Secretly, the best Alien sequel, Alien: Covenant, is currently the most-watched horror movie on HBO Max.

Per HBO Max: Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel finds the crew of a colony ship facing hostile aliens on an uncharted planet.
I’m a certified Alien: Covenant lover. I know that’s controversial, especially among fans who expected a more straightforward return to the Alien mythos after Prometheus, but everything about it just works for me. It’s gorgeous, scary, chock-full of outrageous xenomorph lore, and features Michael Fassbender in one of my favorite dual roles of all time. Walter and David, you have my heart.

In our review from the time of release, we called Alien: Covenant “Cruel and scary,” adding, “The suspense levels are off the charts… It’s a wet, gooey movie, too—slick saliva, bloody barrage, and skin singed by caustic acid are only a few of the agonies suffered by the hapless fodder.” If it’s been a while since you’ve revisited Alien: Covenant, take this as your sign to do so. I’m almost certain you’ll find a lot to love. After all, I called it the “messy, mythic sequel we all needed.”
