A Chilling Horror Film That “Made me jump repeatedly” Is Now Streaming on Tubi

the last shift

I go nuts for a single-location thriller. There’s something so immersive about a film that unfolds in a confined space. It adds a claustrophobic element to the setup and often makes me feel like I’m stuck there with the core character enduring whatever fresh hell they are subjected to.

Some of my favorite genre flicks use this conceit. Buried is one of the best examples I can think of off the top of my head. Green Room and The Strangers are two more that broaden the scope slightly while still primarily sticking to one core locale.

All this talk brings to mind another cinematic offering that effectively executes on the single-location setup. More specifically, I’m talking about Anthony DiBlasi’s nerve-shredding tale of supernatural mayhem, Last Shift. I’m pleased to report that this under-seen gem is now streaming on Tubi!

What is Last Shift about?

After rookie cop Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy) has been assigned the last shift at a transitioning police station, she must wait for a hazardous-materials crew to pick up biomedical evidence; however, the shift turns into a living nightmare.

I am an unapologetic fan of Last Shift. So much so that I previously spoke to all of the different reasons why I love it in my Dread Central column, The Overlooked Motel. Well, maybe not all of the different reasons. That would have been exhaustive and overly verbose. Suffice to say, however, that I spoke to many of the film’s strong suits and my undying appreciation.

Rather than regale you further with what I did or didn’t speak to in my coverage, I will cut to the chase and share a brief excerpt from my write-up below.

Last Shift is one of the films I default to when someone asks me the last time I was scared by a horror movie. It didn’t give me nightmares or make me afraid to sleep with the lights off. But it stuck with me. The film made me jump repeatedly while I was watching it. It left an impression that lasted long after the credits rolled.

I mean it when I say that the flick left a lasting impression. It’s an unflinching exercise in terror if I’ve ever seen one. You don’t have to take my word for it, though. If you like an atmospheric, self-contained horror thriller, make your way over to Tubi and check it out for yourself.
