Hulu Adds New Stephen King Horror Movie Critics Call an “Excellent existential bloodbath”

It seems like the vast majority of films that make their way to the multiplex these days are based on an IP. I get the logic. Studio financiers would rather take a chance on a proven concept than invest in a total gamble. It makes good financial sense, yet that strategy limits the ideas getting greenlit and discourages original thought in the process.
Even still, there are some killer features released of late that make great use of an existing IP. One such film, which is based on a Stephen King short story, is presently gearing up to make its debut on Hulu. Believe us when we say that this is one IP-based horror picture you’ll want to make time for.
We’re talking about writer/director Osgood Perkins’ latest cinematic treasure, The Monkey, which is landing on the Hulu platform on August 7th!
What is The Monkey about?
When twin brothers (adult versions both played by Theo James) find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tears their family apart. Twenty-five years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree, forcing the estranged siblings to confront the cursed toy.

Our Josh Korngut critiqued the film during its theatrical bow and had nothing but love for the picture. He rated the flick 4/5 stars in his coverage. The headline calls the film an “Excellent Existential Bloodbath.” Read below for an excerpt detailing a few aspects of the picture that Korngut really connected with.
“The Monkey proves itself a rare horror film that embraces its premise’s absurdity without sacrificing emotional weight. Perkins is a mad scientist of the macabre who gleefully injects hot red humor into the universal and primal terror that comes with confronting mortality. The film thrives on its ability to balance gallows humor with brutal, inventive horror, making it both a visceral thrill ride and a surprisingly profound meditation on fate. Whether you come for the carnage or stay for the existential crisis, The Monkey delivers something uniquely unsettling and oddly cathartic.”
If you’re moved by that glowing endorsement, you’ll be able to draw your own conclusions about the film shortly. As I mentioned previously, The Monkey is set to bow on Hulu on August 7th.
