The Number One Horror Movie on Netflix is an “Ambitious gem”

The Cursed

Werewolves are popping off. While it was met with mixed reviews, there was a lot I liked about Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man (now streaming on Peacock) this year. Next year, we have Robert Eggers’ Werewulf to look forward to. With Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, Werewulf is as much a werewolf movie as it is a Nosferatu reunion. Oh, and Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves, which was released last year, is worth a look, despite not quite getting the acclaim it deserved.

Werewolves, vampires, mummies – we are practically in the midst of a Universal renaissance. It’s a glorious time to be a horror fan, especially a horror fan raised on the movie monster classics. Better still, it’s always refreshing to see these classic tales refracted through a modern lens. One of the best to do so was a surprise Sundance hit that successfully managed a wide theatrical release. Now, the film is streaming on Netflix, where it’s currently the most-watched horror movie streaming there. Learn more about Sean Ellis’ The Cursed below:

Per Netflix: In the late 1800s, an outsider on a quest for redemption endeavors to stop a spate of brutal slayings befalling a French village with a dark past.

Sean Ellis (The Broken, underrated doppelganger horror) debuted The Cursed, previously titled Eight for Silver, at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The reception was strong enough to warrant a theatrical release, and the retitled The Cursed bowed in February 2022. Reviews were strong, even if box office receipts left a lot to be desired. Still, it’s one of the freshest werewolf movies I’ve seen in years, and I loved how earnestly Ellis, who also scripted, interrogates the longstanding myth of the beast. It’s fresh, modern, but simultaneously classic.

In our original review for the film, we wrote, “Eight For Silver should go down as one of the more ambitious werewolf movies in recent memory, even when it doesn’t manage to find its footing.” There’s a lot to like in The Cursed, and it’s no wonder it’s found a strong audience on Netflix.
