“A monstrous Coming-of-age horror for the digital age” Is Now Free to Stream

As much as I genuinely enjoy more grounded fare, I sometimes have the inexplicable urge to watch something utterly unhinged. I dig the unpredictability that comes with disappearing into a narrative far removed from both reality and the expected. Going into such a feature usually makes me a little anxious because I know it might go disastrously wrong, but any reservations are easily outweighed by the prospect of discovering a diamond in the rough that I will enthusiastically revisit time and again in the future.
As it turns out, a film with plenty of potential to blow your mind is gearing up to leave Hulu later this month. The flick in question is a Finnish export dealing in surreal themes and featuring a largely unrestrained narrative. Have I piqued your curiosity?
I’m talking about Hanna Bergholm’s 2022 body horror film Hatching. If this sounds like the sort of mayhem you could get into, you’re in luck. It’s free to stream right now on both Fawsome and Plex. If you have yet to make up your mind one way or the other, let’s dig into the nuts and bolts.
The setup for Hatching is this:
Tinja is a 12-year-old gymnast who’s desperate to please her image-obsessed mother. After finding a wounded bird in the woods, she brings its strange egg home, nestles it in her bed, and nurtures it until it hatches. The creature that emerges soon becomes her closest friend and a living nightmare, plunging Tinja into a twisted reality that her mom refuses to see.

Dread Central editor-in-chief Mary Beth McAndrews also has an appreciation for the unusual, and she connected with Hatching when she critiqued the flick out of Sundance. McAndrews dubbed the film “a monstrous coming-of-age horror for the digital age” and awarded the picture 3.5/5 stars. She took care to praise the picture’s depiction of an overbearing mother and its impressive production design. See directly below for a larger excerpt from her coverage.
“Hatching is a self-assured debut feature film bursting with incredible monster design and an impeccable set. Bergholm quickly establishes her unique tone and vibe and never waivers from that.”
There you have it, Hatching is leaving Hulu soon! Stay tuned to the site in the near future for more timely admonitions about noteworthy films vanishing from the streaming scene. If you’re keen to keep up with me in the meantime, you can always find me on Threads as @FunWithHorror.
