The Most-Watched Netflix Movie Ever is Getting a Surprise Sequel!

Roar Uthaug is one of this generation’s most underrated genre filmmakers. The Norwegian filmmaker got started with short films (as many directors do) before making their feature debut with 2006’s Cold Prey, arguably the most effective international slasher movie of the entire century (even if I’m partial to the excess of Cold Prey 2). Just as Uthaug revitalized the slasher formula, 2015’s The Wave radically revamped what a disaster movie could be. The Wave is seriously tense stuff, and in our review, we even wrote, “The Wave is a modern-day masterpiece that succeeds in continuing to add huge momentum to Roar Uthaug’s already surging career.”

Naturally, Hollywood scooped Uthaug up, and he helmed 2018’s lackluster Tomb Raider reboot. Luckily, it was an outlier, since Uthaug subsequently helmed Troll, one of the best Netflix original movies of all time. Not just that. Troll is the most-watched Netflix movie not in English… ever. Yeah, ever. And now, Uthaug is back with a sequel set to premiere this holiday season.
To get ready, check out Troll, now streaming on Netflix.
Per Netflix: When an explosion in the Norwegian mountains awakens an ancient troll, officials appoint a fearless paleontologist to stop it from wreaking a deadly havoc.
Troll is a hoot. Uthaug captures the terror of Cold Prey and the scale of The Wave for a monstrous disaster movie unlike anything you’ve ever seen below. Critical reviews were strong, too, with the consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reading, “Troll doesn’t rewrite the monster movie rulebooks—but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn’t have to.” Troll is presently sitting at a pretty 90%, and here’s hoping the upcoming Troll 2 (not this one) can match that acclaim.
If you’re curious what that upcoming sequel looks like, why not check out the trailer below?
As noted, Troll is the most successful international movie of all time on Netflix. The gargantuan title has stomped out the likes of Under Paris and Oscar-nominee Society of the Snow to secure the top spot. Uthaug returned to both draft and direct Troll 2, so there’s little doubt it’ll reach the troll-sized heights of the original.
What do you think? Were you a fan of Troll? Any plans to check it out? Excited for the sequel? Whatever you answer, I want to hear from you! Check in with me over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
