The Scariest Killer Shark Flick of the Century is Now Streaming on Netflix—And, There’s a Sequel on the Way

Of all the horror subgenres out there, I think killer shark horror is the hardest to get right. It’s strange since, at least on the surface (pun intended), it seems like the easiest to get right. There’s a primal kind of fear of swimming alone with such beautiful yet terrifying creatures, and at its core, that’s all a killer shark movie really needs. Yet, as a bonafide killer shark fan, it’s too easy to concede that the subgenre has been drowning as of late.

Titles like Dangerous Animals wisely subvert expectations, and The Shallows is too stylish to dismiss outright, though the subgenre has always been at a disadvantage. After Jaws, it’s impossible to come anywhere close to that classic, and the subgenre has been treading water ever since. Mostly, at least, since filmmaker Johannes Roberts (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has helmed not one, but two of the best killer shark films of all time, and certainly some of the best this century. Both of them are now streaming free on Tubi and on Netflix, but I’d like to spotlight the sequel in particular. It’s an absolutely gonzo killer shark flick, so let it take a bite out of your week.
Learn more about 47 Meters Down: Uncaged below:
Per Netflix: Two sisters join their classmates on a cave dive to explore submerged ruins, only to find themselves hunted by a shark with heightened senses.
In our review of the original 47 Meters Down, we wrote, “The film moves at a steady, scary pace with plenty of “uh-oh” moments to keep you on your toes. Great special effects, great performance by Modine as the calming and matter-of-fact Taylor, and many creepy, sharp-toothed sharks should give even the most mellow audience heart palpitations.”
Amplify that by a hundred, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the energy Uncaged brings to the diving cage. It’s a sequel in the purest sense, adding more of what rendered the first so effective to glorious, gonzo success.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged has fantastic needle drops, crazy albino sharks, and screaming fish. Coupled with the Deep Blue Sea homages and some pretty terrifying sharks, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged exceeds its modest ambitions. It’s a scary, nail-biting killer shark flick with enough personality to immediately set it apart.

The best news? There’s a sequel on the way. We’re getting a 47 Meters Down trilogy, baby. Director Johannes Roberts has shared some insight over on his Instagram, promising that 47 Meters Down: The Wreck is going to be the scariest one yet.
