Take a Bloody Bite of This Terrifying Shark Movie Topping the Streaming Charts
I love a good killer shark flick. I wish there were more of them, but I could probably rattle them all off in under a minute. Now, if I were rattling off just the good ones, I’d probably finish before I wrap writing this sentence. It’s a shame, too, since it’s one of my favorite horror subgenres. Too often, however, I have to scrape through the liminal, end pages of Tubi to find something like Camp Blood Clown Shark to scratch that itch. Real movie, by the way.
The subgenre is the providence of the late Roger Corman and the Syfy channel, and every other low-budget mockbuster studio around. I support their intentions, but I wish there were more earnest, realistic killer shark flicks around. Luckily, I have it on good authority that Dangerous Animals is really good, so I’m certainly eager to check that out. In the meantime, why not revisit an unsung killer shark gem that has emerged from the deep to land itself as the most-watched horror movie on Hulu? Per Hulu: A British diver’s lifelong search for a WWII shipwreck leads to a life-and-death dive with him and his group of old college friends. Trapped in the dark depths, they are forced to confront their own limits and fears before time runs out.
Released last summer, The Last Breath is a mix of Andrew Traucki’s survival thrillers with a dash of 47 Meters Down thrown in. The set-up is quite simple. A bunch of experienced divers visit a wreck and encounter a pack of killer sharks who have made the wreckage their home. Much like Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s The Deep House, most of The Last Breath is filmed underwater, with the characters combating not just the killer predators, but depleting oxygen supplies as well. Is it conventional? Yes. But it’s just as often thrilling and frightening, even if it’s been done before.
The Last Breath has been a surprise success on Hulu. Last summer, Under Paris emerged as one of the most-watched Netflix movies of all time, so it’s clear that audiences are craving some killer sharks to start their summers off. If Dangerous Animals does well, maybe this will incentivize a new killer shark trend. A boy can dream.
