Stephen King Praises Chilling Netflix Series: “Close to a work of genius, really.”

Horror fans know that Stephen King and Mike Flanagan are a dynamic duo. In fact, some of Flanagan’s most noteworthy efforts are adaptations of King’s work. Well, it turns out that King is a huge fan of a particular Flanagan adaptation based on the work of another celebrated author. We’re talking about Flanagan’s bone-chilling Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House, which is a very loose adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name.
King tweeted his praise for Hill House a few years back, saying: “The Haunting of Hill House, revised and remodeled by Mike Flanagan. I don’t usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius, really. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.”

While no one can definitively say whether or not Shirley Jackson would approve, the reaction from both critics and fans has been overwhelmingly positive. So, we suspect she’d probably see the same merit in the property that so many others do. If you have yet to experience this eerie adaptation, make your way over to Netflix and give the series a shot.
The setup for this interpretation goes as follows:
The series follows four siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults, they are forced back together in the face of tragedy and must finally confront the ghosts of their past. Some of those ghosts still lurk in their minds, while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House.
There you have it, dear reader. The one and only Stephen King is an outspoken fan of Mike Flanagan’s Netflix adaptation The Haunting of Hill House. The show is (currently) available to stream on the platform, so make your way over to Netflix and check it out before the streamer shakes things up and removes it from their lineup like they recently did with the original film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
