Mike Flanagan Praises “Bleak, Brutal” Thriller, Now Streaming Free

Mike Flanagan Fury

War movies are having a bit of a comeback. Granted, most of that is courtesy of filmmaker and writer Alex Garland, whose Warfare and Civil War have both reignited interest in what was once a thriving subgenre. If war movies are going to take off again, those are the kinds I’d like to see. Claustrophobic, scary movies whose intent is to frighten, not valorize. Civil War was, after all, pretty danged scary despite my personal misgivings.

I’m excited to see what Garland cooks up next, with his script for 28 Years Later looking (from the trailers at least) to lean into that warfare sensibility, what with its many soldiers and sundry explosions. All that got me thinking about previous war movies that scratch that same genre itch. Sam Mendes’ 1917 is pretty sensational, and David Ayer’s Fury ranks among the best work Ayer has ever done. The latter even comes with a personal recommendation from filmmaker Mike Flanagan. The best news? Fury is now streaming free on Tubi.

Per Tubi: A crew of seasoned yet jaded soldiers must welcome a new recruit into their tank while battling against the Nazis in World War II.

When it comes to David Ayer, I’m partial toward Sabotage, his Agatha Christie riff with DEA agents. Last year’s The Beekeeper was also pretty great, and part of me is desperate to see Jason Statham in a horror movie (that isn’t The Meg). Fury is much quieter, at least in terms of scale, even if its action and thrills are no less explosive. Logan Lerman and Michael Peña join Brad Pitt as members of an American tank crew fighting in Germany, and the titular Fury, the tank they command, is a remarkable setting.

So much so, the film wowed The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Taking to Letterboxd, Flanagan remarked how the film, “Hits HARD,” further calling Fury, “Bleak, brutal, and uncompromising.”

Check out his review in full below:

“Hits HARD. Engrossing war movie is bleak, brutal, and uncompromising. Oil, mud, blood, and despair give way to bursts of adrenaline and pure survival instinct. I found it gripping and effective, while being an utterly claustrophobic experience. You’re trapped in a cold metal tomb, and there is no light…”

With Fury streaming free on Tubi now, here’s your chance to check the film out. Once you do, be certain to let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
