This Terrifying Killer Clown Slasher is Now Streaming

Out of the Dark

Clowns are terrifying. According to the National Institute of Health, more than 50% of Americans report some form of coulrophobia, or an irrational or extreme fear of clowns. It’s why clowns are popping up everywhere in popular culture, whether in the new slasher Clown in a Cornfield or the found footage gem, Hell House LLC. Oh, and both It and It: Chapter 2 are the first and sixth highest-grossing horror movies of all time, respectively. There’s always money in the clown car. Here’s hoping the upcoming Clown in a Cornfield can deliver more of the same.

And killer clowns have been around for a long while. 1982’s Poltergeist has a fantastic possessed clown doll, and the short-lived anthology series One Step Beyond aired a terrifying episode in 1960 titled “The Clown,” and it’s about exactly what you think it is. One of the best killer clown flicks, however, is one you probably haven’t seen. It’s a sleazy deep-cut, though it’s now luckily streaming on Shudder.

Per Shudder: An employee at a telephone fantasy service helps hunt for the killer preying on her silken-voiced colleagues.

Out of the Dark is sexy, progressive, trashy, and pretty dang terrifying. In one of my earliest pieces ever for Dread Central, I even made the case that Out of the Dark deserves to be remade. There, I wrote, “The kills are savage, the costuming is well done, the staging (particularly for one bait-and-switch kill scene that legitimately sent shivers down my spine) is professional, and both the acting and characterization exceed whatever your expectations might be for a movie about a clown killing sex workers.” Out of the Dark is excellent and absolutely worth checking out.

The film is just one of several fantastic slasher movies now available to stream on Shudder. Chopping Mall is a hoot, Prom Night is groovy and great, and Sorority House Massacre has my heart. Out of the Dark is likely unfamiliar to most audiences, however, so this is my official suggestion to start there. It’s clowntastic.

What do you think? Any plans to check out Out of the Dark on Shudder? When you do, let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins. I promise the film is worth checking out. It’s become a new favorite of mine, and I hope you feel the same. If not, who knows? Maybe the clown will get you…
