Quentin Tarantino has turned his passion for film into a lucrative career. The director came from humble beginnings but took Hollywood by storm when he burst onto the scene. He is a visionary filmmaker with plenty of thoughts on cinema in all its various forms.

Tarantino is typically quite eager to share his cinematic hot takes, even when it gets him in trouble. When the Oscar-winning director appeared on the Club Random Podcast, he shared a spicy take on the Toy Story franchise.

It turns out that the Pulp Fiction director is so fond of the initial Toy Story trilogy that he has no time for any further installments in the family-friendly franchise, no matter how good they are.

“The third one is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen… I have no desire to see the fourth one,” Tarantino said. “You ended the story as perfect as you could, so I don’t care if it’s good, I’m done.”

I can’t necessarily blame Tarantino for calling it a day on the franchise. There’s something to be said for leaving well enough alone. One should be cautious about limiting oneself. But how many series installments do we need? When is enough actually enough? The answer might be never, seeing as a 5th film has already locked down a 2026 release date. However, that’s no great surprise. Each series installment has been well-received by fans and critics alike. In an industry where money talks, a franchise isn’t dead until people stop buying tickets.

I think part of the Toy Story series’ success can be attributed to consistency. Pixar has done a remarkable job of maintaining much of the same voice cast over the life of the franchise. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen have returned for each sequel to voice Woody and Buzz respectively. That continuity and the legitimate emotion these playthings bring to the proceedings keep people coming back time and again. Except for Quentin Tarantino, of course.

Toy Story 4 plays out like this: Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. Their adventurous journey turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody’s slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep. As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realize that they’re worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy.
