The Most-Watched Thriller On Hulu Has a “Disturbing” Twist Ending

Hulu

Hulu might be the least flashy among the current crop of streamers, though they’ve regularly got some certified bangers available to stream for free. This week, William Oldroyd’s Eileen is topping the charts, landing at Number 2.

Based on the 2015 novel by Ottessa Moshfegh, Eileen first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before releasing theatrically in December of last year. Now, the critical darling is free to stream on Hulu, inviting an entirely new audience into its twisted game of love and deception with one of the year’s most shocking endings. Seriously, the less you know going into Eileen, the better.

Per Hulu: Based on the best-selling book, young secretary Eileen becomes enchanted by the glamorous new counselor at the prison where she works. Their budding friendship takes a twisted turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret — throwing Eileen onto a sinister path.

Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie star, and both are exceptional (McKenzie’s shaky accent notwithstanding). They have deeply sinister chemistry that, despite all odds, is regularly just as earnest and touching. Until the Hitchcockian elements take over, of course. Eileen will keep you guessing until the very end, so it’s no wonder it’s been performing so well on the Hulu charts.

In our review out of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, I wrote, “Eileen is a kind of cross between both Todd Hayne’s Carol and David Slade’s Hard Candy.” That’s the most I’ll say, and while Eileen can at times be uneven, it’s entrancing, and supremely tense, throughout.

Fans have mostly been loving the film. They’ve taken to social media to share their thoughts now that Eileen is topping the Hulu charts. Check out some choice reactions below:

The Anne Hathaway stans are losing it, and they should. Eileen is it.

What do you think? Do you plan to check out Eileen on Hulu? If you have, how’d you like it? Let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
