John Waters Names This Horror-Comedy As His Favorite Film Of 2023

John Waters

We all want to know what our favorite filmmakers are watching. This is why end-of-year lists from notable names almost always go viral on the internet streets. While most people usually ask the same few guys their favorite movies every year, Vulture won by asking the “Baron of Bad Taste” John Waters his favorite films of 2023.

Anyone remotely familiar with Waters’ filmography knew his list would be drastically different than the others making the rounds this year. Not only did he deliver a list befitting of all the monikers he has been crowned over the decades, but he gave his top spot to an A24 movie. It turns out the legendary John Waters really enjoyed Ari Aster’s horror-comedy Beau Is Afraid.

Beau Is Afraid

Waters described the film as “A superlong, super-crazy, super-funny movie about one man’s mental breakdown with a cast better than Around the World in 80 Days’: Joaquin Phoenix, Patti LuPone, Parker Posey, Nathan Lane, and Amy Ryan. It’s a laugh riot from hell you’ll never forget, even if you want to.”

Beau Is Afraid arrived in theaters early this year on April 14. It’s Ari Aster’s third film after Hereditary and Midsommar. This also marks Aster’s third collaboration with A24. However, this was the first of his films where he also served as a producer on the project.

This title did not do as well at the box office as his previous two movies and was somehow even more divisive. Although, it has been name-checked by John Waters and Martin Scorsese. I have to assume that might be considered an even bigger win for most filmmakers.

Plus, Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews enjoyed the strange, Oedipal ride, writing in her review:

Beau Is Afraid is Ari Aster at his most free and his most unhinged. Between chaotic editing, a cacophonous score, and non-stop nightmare scenarios, Beau Is Afraid is authentically Aster through and through.
