Martin Scorsese Says These Recent Horror Masterpieces Helped “Inspire” New Film ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

Martin Scorsese’s new movie hits theaters today. However, as an avid movie watcher, he can’t help discussing the work of other filmmakers as he’s promoting Killers of the Flower Moon. That’s one of the things we all love about Uncle Marty. However, we specifically perked up when the cinephile mentioned the work of one horror director inspired him on his newest outing.

While talking to The Irish Times about many things, Scorsese casually name-dropped Ari Aster and said the tempo of his movies helped him navigate the the  hours that make up Killers of the Flower Moon.

“I very much like the style and pacing of good horror films like Ari Aster’s Midsommar or Beau Is Afraid. The pacing of those films goes back to the B films of Val Lewton, Jacques Tourneur’s Cat People, or I Walked With a Zombie. Just going a little slower. A little quieter.”  The Irish Times

I don’t think any of us had Scorsese telling us that he’s inspired by Ari Aster on our bingo cards. However, it does make sense now that we’ve collected our thoughts. If you’re unfamiliar with Killers of the Flower Moon, allow me to give you a quick crash course.

The 1920s crime drama is based on David Grann’s book of the same name. It is set in Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.

It was adapted for the screen by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese. Scorsese is also in the director’s chair again. The movie stars Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser.
