Martin Scorsese Was “So Unsettled” By This Disturbing New Movie That He Couldn’t Sleep

Martin Scorsese has spent quite a few decades making a name for himself in the film world. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas are just the three movies that come to mind from his long career. His movies have been winning awards since before most of us were born. He has worked with some of our favorite actors before they were our favorites. His resume makes guys in our film classes feral. Scorsese is also a celebrated film activist and preservationist. So, when he talks about cinema we all lean forward.

This is why we’re all excited to see Martin Scorsese flip out about Ti West’s Pearl. The prequel to this spring’s X is the horror movie Mr. Scorsese is here to sing the praises of today.

According to our friends over at Slashfilm, the powers that be at A24 received this glowing review from the legend himself:

“Ti West’s movies have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, powered by a pure, undiluted love for cinema. You feel it in every frame. A prequel to made in a diametrically opposite cinematic register (think 50s Scope color melodramas), Pearl makes for a wild, mesmerizing, deeply — and I mean deeply — disturbing 102 minutes. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth really know how to toy with their audience … before they plunge the knife into our chests and start twisting. I was enthralled, then disturbed, then so unsettled that I had trouble getting to sleep. But I couldn’t stop watching.”

This is very high praise from someone who eats film for breakfast. Especially from Martin Scorsese, who has a record of being very vocal with his thoughts on modern film trends.

Pearl is available on VOD if you want to take the same ride as Scorsese. The prequel has garnered much attention from horror fans on Twitter, who are quickly becoming Ti West stans. Mia Goth’s performance in the film has also got the horror fiends talking. So, Scorsese is not alone in his thoughts on the film. However, it is cool to see a legend also agrees with most of us about one of the horror hits of the year.

Let me know if you agree with Martin Scorese’s review of Pearl at @misssharai.
